I am 5' 11" 160 lbs my chest size is some where between a 40 and 41 so I decided to go with a large for layering purposes. It fits perfect over a hoodie and provides the extra chest warmth I desire from a vest. If i wanted it to be a under coat vest i would go with a medium (not really what it is designed for). Being a waxed cotton it is stiff in feel like a new pair of denim jeans which will wear in nicely as the vest conforms to life with me. Wearing the vest alone it doesn't feel too big but at this point with the stiffness; the roominess (air gaps) is noticeable but as it gets softer with wear that will go away. It does have a flare out as it gets into the hip area. Its better than the alternative of tightness around the hips especially when you carry anything attached to your belt. I am very fond of this vest.
