The Mackinaw Coat

I've always wanted the Filson Double Makinaw coat for a winter coat, but price was always prohibitive. When I found a Stormy Kromer on sale at Black Friday for nearly half the price of the Single Mac I decided to give it a try. Its a beautiful coat, but its not adequately warm for the current temps below 0*F (currently -10F). I'm sure it will be great in spring and fall or for more mild climates. But winter in ND needs something warmer. I originally purchase a medium due to all the reviews that said it runs big. I am a 52 year old man about 5'10 and around 163lbs. I found that the medium fits similar to a suit coat. The shoulders fit great and I had room in the chest for additional layers such as a vest. However, as soon as I lifted my arms the sleeves pulled up way to short and it pulled too tight under the arms to be comfortable. So I exchanged it for a large. The large may look a tad too big, but it is much more comfortable. I have much better range of motion and it just feels better. I think the Medium might look better due to the tighter fit, but the large provides better mobility. If you are going to be active and moving around go with the same size shirt you wear. If you want a coat that fits more like a suit jacket you can go down one size. Now if Stormy Kromer would just make something similar to the discontinued Double Mac or the Packer coat. I'd still like a double layer winter coat.

So I bought the red and black plaid cruiser about 5 years ago, size 50, and LOVE it. Bought the new one, XXL, in grey. I liked the old one better, WAY better. First, I will say that the quality of the jacket remains high. Very well made. But my problems are these. First, the size 50 fits me like a glove. The XXL does not. It is bigger, and just bigger enough to be annoying. I was told by customer service at the excel would be too small, and I believe that to be the case. I like the old, number sizing better. Next, the material changed. It is not as soft, and a little heavier. I loved the wait and softness of the previous jacket. Finally, my old cruiser had two buttons on the cuffs for each sleeve, so you could control whether or not the cuffs came down over your hands or not. The new one has only one set of buttons on the cuffs, and the cuff openings are too big, and I mean WAY too big. Sleeves come down over my hands, and ride way too low. I wish I could order the old one in grey!

I was comparison shopping between this coat and Filson's Mackinaw, and this was the better coat. I am very impressed with the quality of the product, and love the company. I own a fair number of Filson garments, and this is as good or better. Sizing is generous and good for layering.

I consider myself a bit of a connoisseur on wool clothing owning several products from several top brands. The SK Mackinaw is right up there in quality, a densely-woven wool, not scratchy like lesser wools and its thick the way I like my wool outerwear. This will be durable and last decades. Sizing: I'm 6'4" and 270# and had to downsize to a XL Tall, I originally bought an 3XL Tall and was swimming in it. Tried a 2XL Tall and it was still too big across the shoulders, chest, and body. I like the length of the talls. If I could change one thing, I'd add an interior chest pocket for a modern mobile phone. A phone will fit in the outer lower cargo pockets but I put other things there like my keys and gloves. The upper handwarmer pockets are nice when standing around to put your hands in and keep hands warm but won't hold anything else well.

I have lived in Western New York all my life-67 years. To put things in perspective, I'm a half-hour drive from two of our Great Lakes; Lake Erie and Ontario. Our winters can be harsh with Lake effect snow; lots of snow, high winds, and the snow coming down sideways. We have snow piles in our parking lots into July-see, the blizzard of 1977. We had to relocate the venue of the Buffalo Bills game this Sunday because of seventy-seven-plus inches of snow, I'm old school, prefer wool, and purchased the wool Mackinaw Coat in Red/Black Plaid. I'm six-two, at two-hundred eighty, and the XXX-Large-Tall allows for layering, such as a midweight layer/wool sweater. I rate this coat right up there with a 40-year-old Woolrich Hunting coat; it fits a little snug now, and my Schott Melton Wool Pea Coat. I place the Stormy Krommer Machinaw right up there with the Filson for far less money.

I went back and forth for a couple of years trying to decide on this coat, or that competitor out west. For a hundred bucks less, this is, in my opinion, a better coat. It's heavier and a better fit than their "Cruiser". It's ruggedly built and is of high quality all the way around. I'm just shy of 6 foot tall and weigh 170. I chose the Large size as I usually layer with thicker wool or fleece shirts or sweaters. I also like a roomier fit as it helps keep me warmer. This is the perfect coat for the coming Northern Wisconsin winter!

A top quality wool coat. I’ve had it since last autumn, and it’s outstanding. Collar is big and flips up to block the wind nicely. It’s comfortable in +10 to -10 Celsius with a big sweater. Sizing is big, 5 11” and 180lbs and the medium fits well in the shoulders with room to layer. Cut is straight, so there’s extra room in the waist. I would suggest offering a tapered version for slimmer clients. This coat is built to last

Ordered a 2XLT. I guess "on average" that's what I received - but I'm not shaped like a triangle pointing upward, nor is your sizing guide. The shoulders were too narrow for anything more than a t-shirt (and still too tight), but I could have worn a life preserver belt at the waist with room to spare. I'm 6'6, and wear a 50XL coat, 42 waist. Should have fit perfectly / room to spare according to sizing guide: 2XLT=50/52 chest, 42/44 waist. I had high hopes for this coat to replace my old Woolrich, happy owner of a SK Ironwood vest as well. Get the shoulder-to-waist ratio corrected and I might be back for another try. ---- Hi Robert, I am sorry your coat didn't quite fit as expected.
